Ike management lesson 1- 'Where do I see myself in five years?'

Every day you must ask this question 'Where do I see myself in five years?'

Get it right please. Sophocles said, 'Wisdom outweighs any wealth;' wisdom is acquired by an open mind, experience, and learning new skills. Wisdom helps you to take the right decisions; arrogance and self-denial, or delusion that sits at the opposite spectrum of conventional wisdom helps us to deteriorate swiftly.

Every day you must ask this question 'Where do I see myself in five years?'

John Milton uttered these famous words: 'Give me the liberty to know, to utter, and to argue freely according to my conscience, above all liberties."

In my humble opinion, liberty to know, overcoming our weaknesses, questioning our doubts and getting to the bottom of things is the road map based on which we all can progress.

It is the kind of company you keep that will determine our future. If one takes to the air with vultures, one ends up being a scavenger; if one soars with eagles, one attains towering heights.

I earnestly believe that our future will be dictated by the kind of company I keep and the school I swim with.

Don't waste your time on trivialities, rather, focus and learn every day. Whatever our job is, let's do it to our own best internal satisfaction; if unsure, ask questions. It is asking the right questions that makes you a great employee. No one knows all the answers, we were taught that the bottom line is asking the right questions.

You will acquire the colour of the herd, if your herd is fighting fit; you will have the innate potential to extract the best out of the circumstances you are put in. A 'team' is like a shoal of fish that averts the disaster of being devoured by sea lions through synchronised unity of action.

Productivity, positive attitude and taking responsibility of action is key for survival in the contemporary corporate world.

When you have an uncomfortable situation, talk to your manager straight away; don't ever accept a situation where you feel compromised for issues that are dear to our human heritage. Always say a big 'no' to things you consider unfair. By fearing or keeping mum, we encourage failure; and once you fail, the collective spirit suffers and the whole momentum is arrested.

Don't forget, we are not here to point out each others' mistakes, rather, have to help each other towards a trajectory of growth and learning. The day you accept responsibility and apologise for a mistake, it will be the highlight of your professional career. It is awareness of our weaknesses that you become strongest.
